The Youth Hotel Ennstalerhof is the ideal departing point for a wide range of ventures in Salzburger Land: Only 50 kilometres from Altenmarkt is one of the oldest salt mines in the world.
At Duernberg, south of the city of Salzburg is one of the oldest salt mine exhibitions in the world – The Salt mine Hallein. Already when the Celt’s had built the salt mine in Hallein and were mining the so called “white gold”, the Salzburger prince archbishop helped the salt from Hallein generate wealth and splendour.
Salt Mine Hallein: Go ever deeper into the mountain on wooden slides
On arrival at the salt mine Hallein you will be handed a miner’s uniform. Dressed completely in white, the trip can begin. You will take a small train down a deep tunnel to the salt mines, where you will then slide ever further into the belly of the mountain on polished wooden slides. A special highlight is the salt lake which you will cross on a raft. At the salt mine Hallein you can then watch some salt being mined.
