OBJECTS OF INTEREST - LAND SALZBURG:

Castle Mauterndorf

Castle Mauterndorf – approx. 40 km

Established in Roman times on the central North South trading route which led across the Hohe Tauern pass what is now today named "Mauterndorf". The protection of the market municipality in the 13th Century was the responsibility of the Salzburg cathedral chapter and the toll gate was at this time established at castle Mauterndorf. The Cathedral head, Burkhard of Weisspriach and archbishop Leonhard of Keutschach extended the fortress in 15th century. The castle Mauterndorf was up to the year 1806 in the possession of the cathedral chapter and functioned as its administration centre, where it then reverted to a state property. Since the beginning of the 19th century it was increasingly threatened by dilapidation. In 1894 it was acquired by Dr. Hermann of Eppenstein, a wealthy military doctor from Berlin, and he renovated it at large cost.
The country Salzburg acquired the fortress from the Republic of Austria in the year 1968. The historical building with a total investment of approximately 20 million Austrian Schillings was renovated from 1979 to 1982. Today the castle Mauterndorf presents itself as an impressive historical building with an interesting past. Nowadays the halls, vaults and bedrooms are used as adventure exhibition "Desire the Middle Ages" (a time journey into 15th century), as landscape museum for the Lungau, as regional cultural centre and as catering trade enterprise.
