| FUN & ACTION - WINTER: Cross country skiing etiquette: 1. Consideration for others Every cross country skier must behave in such a way that he/she does not endanger or injure any others. 2. Signalling, direction of travel and movement technique Markings and signals (signs) are to be observed. The direction indicated is to be followed on all tracks and runs as well as the movement technique. 3. Choice of lane and run The right hand lane is to be used on double and multiple lanes. Cross country skiers travelling in groups must stay one behind the other in the right hand lane. Stay on the right hand side when in free movement technique. 4. Overtaking Overtaking can be performed on the right or the left. The front skier does not have to make any avoidance although avoidance is appreciated when it can be performed safely. 5. Oncoming traffic All parties should return to there right hand lane. 6. Stick guidance When overtaking and the person being overtaken should ensure that their meeting sticks are kept as close to their bodies as possible. 7. Adjustment of speed to conditions Each cross country skier, particularly going downhill, has to adjust his/her speed and behaviour to their skill level, surface conditions, traffic and visual restrictions. They must maintain a safe distance between themselves and the skier in front. If necessary initiate a controlled fall to avoid any collision. 8. Keep tracks and runs free When standing still, please step off the track/run. A fallen cross country skier must try to vacate the track as quickly and safely as possible. 9. Assistance In case of an accident, everyone is expected to lend assistance. 10. Identification Every one, whether a witness or participant, whether responsible or not must present their particulars in the case of an accident.
